The Generosity of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Man I Had Just Met Assisted Me Land the Job That Altered My Path

In the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a backpacking trip to Europe with a friend. Because my friend was exploring starting a postgraduate program in NYC, we had planned a 14-day stopover there en route to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a large 10-storey building on the Upper West Side named International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the dining hall, where we picked up meals, found a table, and engaged in conversation with fellow residents.

Adjacent to my seat was an Iraqi man studying engineering at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I did for a living, and I shared that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at the institution – right next door to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I should apply for a role with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that night. The man from Iraq came up to me and informed me that he had organized a discussion for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Given that he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but right away explained to my prospective employer that I was without a work permit, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

In typical New York fashion – a metropolis where everything seems achievable – she declared: “That can be arranged. When can you start?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I worked there for three years. An advantage of the role was that I also received no-cost classes at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a graduate degree in global studies.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his identity, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in numerous aspects. I lacked the courage or self-assurance to approach someone at an Ivy League university and request employment. And, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit.

Perhaps most importantly, that gig at Columbia paved the way for a role in Europe where I encountered my handsome spouse from France, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That benevolent individual set me on a different course in life, and I’m always appreciative.
