The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Consider this a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your partner and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like standard physical horror, but inside Together exists a deep meditation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story begins when the couple transition from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes conclude. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity starts to affect the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and removed from his network of friends. He fears the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.

The couple confront the type of challenges that come with long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
