Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People using these medications need to be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
Individuals who have come off the medication report a powerful return of cravings.
"It felt as if something flipping and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
