EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other judicial news:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to reduce security grants to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge ruled the action was “a further instance” of linking government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city prior to the holiday period, alongside an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in dozens of migrants from the US in return for increased assistance, after signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a well-known cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international actions.
