Federal authorities has officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, seeking to block the state's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Broader Implications
The legal battle represents the major response by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and potential further challenges.
