Critical Role Season Four Unveils the Soldiers Group

Since the launch of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a colorful mix of heroes, and a thrilling plot featuring divine entities, demons, and sinister influences growing in power within the city.

Heads-up: Spoilers for Episode 3 of the new season are included.

The Combat-Oriented Party Unveiled

The third episode finished on a major cliffhanger and introduced the premier party of adventurers who will branch out from the main group to embark on their own adventure, separate from the remaining groups.

The combat-focused team consists of the determined fighter (portrayed by the voice actor), the agile character (the talented performer), the fierce warrior (Whitney Moore), Wicander Halovar (Sam), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie Daymond).

Why Split the Party?

With an extensive roster, it was clear from the beginning that maintaining everyone at one table would be unfeasible.

This explains, the initial installments of the new season serve as an Overture, connecting the individual narratives before splitting into three distinct groups: Fighters, Planners, and Explorers.

Characteristics of the Soldiers Table

As described by the Dungeon Master, the warrior group is for adventurers who enjoy a classically intense battle-oriented narrative style where non-violent answers are rare.

Initially, characters like the squeamish cleric Wicander might look out of place, but the developments of the third episode show why these five characters are ideally matched for the combat party.

Motivations for Departure

First, the party understands precisely where to go next after a brutal initial meeting with The Crow Keepers.

A former ally of Thjazi—whose passing initiated the narrative’s action—exploited the enemy for his selfish purposes, invading Thjazi’s hideout, assaulting the rogue, and stealing all the magical artifacts to auction.

The antagonist then cleared his liabilities and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in Gormalay, Timmony, north of the urban center, with Teor’s brother hot on his heels.

Character Drivers

Additionally, each character has a individual motive to exit Dol-Makjar:

  • The rogue, as the companion and trusted friend, wants vengeance.
  • The adventurer has experience in the northern area and warns that it is a nasty place.
  • Tyranny and The healer, having resisted his family’s wishes to eliminate the fighter and instead freed him, have no other options.
  • But, their position as prominent individuals in the influential clan could help the party reach areas they normally couldn’t.
  • Additionally, Teor swore a unbreakable promise to Wicander for his deliverance and will now go with him wherever.

Fugitives

Lastly, all of them are wanted by the rulers that govern the city for a multiple motives, making remaining behind dangerous:

  • The rogue and The hero are recognized lawbreakers.
  • Tyranny and Wicander betrayed the influential house and the horde of evil beings they are allied with.
  • The fighter is marked for death by the clan.

This results in them little choice but to travel to Timmony in quest for the antagonist.

Upcoming Developments

Based on episode three’s follow-up content, we find out that the warrior group will be absent in the upcoming installment, leaving the remaining eight cast members to assemble the Questers and Schemers groups.

Fans can expect learning which characters will be where in Campaign 4’s concluding setup installment, available to watch on next week.
